How do I find out what model my Mac is?

At MyMac Computer Campbelltown, one of the most common questions we get is: “How do I know which Mac model I have?” Whether you’re booking a repair, buying parts, or checking compatibility, knowing your exact Mac model is essential.

Here are three quick ways to identify your Mac model:

1. Check the Bottom of Your Mac

This is the most direct method, especially if your Mac won’t power on.
Flip your MacBook or Mac Mini over and look near the regulatory markings. You’ll find small text including the Model Number — something like “A2338” or “A1418.”
Once you have the model number, simply Google it (e.g., “Mac A2338 model”) to get full specs.

For iMacs, the model number is usually printed on the underside of the stand or on the back of the enclosure near the power port.

Step 2: Use the Apple Menu

The easiest way to find your Mac’s model is through the Apple menu:

  1. Click the Apple logo in the top-left corner of your screen.

  2. Select “About This Mac.”

  3. A window will appear showing your Mac’s name, such as “MacBook Pro (13-inch, M1, 2020)” or “iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2019).”

This window also shows your macOS version, processor, memory, and serial number.

Step 3: Use the Serial Number

If your Mac won’t turn on, you can still find the model using the serial number:

  • For MacBooks, the serial number is printed on the underside.

  • For iMacs and Mac Minis, it’s often on the bottom or the back.

Once you have the serial number, go to Apple’s official website:
https://checkcoverage.apple.com
Enter the serial number to see detailed model info.

Step 4: Use System Information

For advanced users, you can also open System Information (press and hold the Option key, then click the Apple menu > System Information). This offers more technical details, including model identifier codes like “MacBookPro18,3.”
